Sew it, Win it, Build it- A Chance to Win a Sewing Room Make-Over from P4P

I’m so excited to announce that we’ve hit another milestone in our P4P Facebook Group of 30,000 members! I’m so very honored to have so many ladies interested in P4P it makes my heart (and maybe my eyes) swell!!

I brainstormed on how we should celebrate for a LONG time! In the past we’ve done free patterns for group members, big giveaways, sales… but I kept thinking about how much fun I was having planning and designing my new sewing room at our new house we’re in the process of building. Here I am in my soon-to-be new sewing space!

I get giddy every time I think about that new bigger space! So I came up with the idea to give away a new sewing room for one lucky member!

What is included in a Sewing Room Makeover?

We all thought long and hard about what we love in our current sewing rooms (and what we’d love to upgrade in them if we had the opportunity) and here is what we thought you needed for a brand new or upgraded sewing room!

We included an Ikea gift card to help furnish the space. I’m planning on doing a big U shape for my machines in my new room from Ikea! I will share some more on how I planned my room as well to help you!

We also included a Joann’s gift card to help get those supplies like scissors, good lighting, notions, and whatever else you may be missing that don’t have those extra funds for! Don’t worry if that sounds a little daunting to pick out- we will be sharing some of our favorite things this week during the contest to help you plan and pick!

A few rules to highlight:

The item sewn up and shared must be a P4P pattern.

You need to sew it up as is, with only fit changes (so no hacks or mods ladies). Adding embellishments is great, just no major changes.

Your picture must be in your current sewing space showing off where you sew currently.

Share your pictures on one or all of the social media networks for more chances to win with hashtag #P4PSewWinBuild — it must be EXACT to come up in our search for the winner!

P4P Raglan Week: Keyhole/Scoopback Raglan Hack

The classic basic silhouette of a raglan makes for a great base to play with fabric pairings and adding extra details to change them up a bit. I often look at boutique style for inspiration and the keyhole, scoop back has been a popular request among members in the P4P Facebook Group so we thought we’d share the how-to. I used the Slim Fit Raglan for my example, but this could easily be applied to any of the raglan patterns.

Print and assemble your pattern as usual.
Decide how low you would like your key hole and measure from the nape of your neck to desired length. I wanted the keyhole to sit just above my bra-line so went with 8″.
Draw your keyhole curve, starting 1″ inside the edge where you would attach your sleeve down to the length you desire. I didn’t have a french curve handy, so actually used the curve from the armscye of the sleeve pattern piece as a guide. Cut out keyhole.

Construct your raglan as usual.
We are going to bind the keyhole with the traditional knit binding method but you could also do a t-shirt band (like the neckband in the pattern) as another option. Measure the keyhole length then multiply by 90% (this is your width measurement) You will stretch the binding just ever so slightly to fit the opening. This will help keep the keyhole from gaping and lie flat. Binding = 2″ x width.

With right sides together, pin binding to keyhole, matching raw edges. Stitch with 3/8″ seam allowances.

Press seam allowance up and fold binding down towards raw edge. Fold again, enclosing seam allowance.

Alternatively, if using a thicker fabric for your binding, you can skip the first fold and just fold the binding over enclosing the raw edge.

Top-stitch with your favorite stretch stitch.

For the neckline, we will use the same binding method as shown above for the keyhole but need to take a few measurements to determine the length of binding you will use for the neckline only.

Measure your neckline. Pictured: shirt on the fold so my neckline is 2 times the length.

Neckbands are typically smaller than the neckline to bring it in and prevent gaping. To determine the amount of the binding for the neckline, multiply the length by 85%. Neckline = 24″ (it looks like 23″ but actually measures 12″ on the fold) so my binding length for the neckline is about 20.5″. Total Binding = 2″ x 58″.

Fold your binding in 1/2 to find the center point. My neck binding length is 20.5″ so we will measure out 1/2 to each side of center point. (or 10.25″ for my example). Mark end points.

With right sides together and aligning raw edges, match center point and end points of neckline and binding. Stitch with 3/8″ seam allowance from endpoint to endpoint to endpoint (neckline only).

Press seam allowance up and press binding down towards raw edge. Fold again, enclosing seam allowance.

Continue folding towards the end of the tails.

Top-stitch with your favorite stretch stitch.
Tie a bow and your done!

Remember when we posted the #SewLikeAPirate freebies? Well, someone (me…Katy) dropped the ball and forgot to announce the winners of our contest! So here I am, eating crow and announcing the winners a bit late. Whoops! Sorry to leave you all hanging in suspense.

#SewLikeAPirate :: Freebies and a Contest!

15K Member Celebration!!

I’m pretty sure we blinked and the Patterns for Pirates Facebook Group welcomed it’s 15,000th member. And then we blinked a few more times and we’re closer to the 16K mark at this point! It’s been amazing being surrounded by a bunch of women (and some men too!) who love sewing, supporting each other, and the patterns that we’ve put out over the last few years.

#PINspiredPIRATES :: A Monthly Sewing Contest!

Wahoo! Patterns for Pirates is officially launching a new social media contest!

Now that you’re in the addicting world of self-care sewing, you realize how easy it is to be inspired (or “pin”spired, rather) by things you see all over the internet. Or even in the store as you’re browsing. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve inspected a shirt in a store (or even taken a quick picture of it), just so I could go home and recreate it myself.

The girls at Patterns for Pirates are here to enable your self-care sewing habits even more!

It’s easy to enter, too!

Step 1: Sew something, using a P4P pattern of course, that you’ve drawn inspiration from. Inspiration can come from anywhere…a pin on Pinterest, something in a boutique shop, a shirt you saw at Target, a stranger passing by, etc.
Step 2: Take a picture of yourself rocking it.
Step 3: Post it on Instagram, using the tag: #PinspiredPirates Be sure to tell us which P4P pattern you used and the thing you were inspired by! (Don’t have an IG account? Go ahead and share it on P4P’s Facebook group, still using #PinspiredPirates and we will count that as an entry as well.)
Step 4: Repeat steps 1-3 as many times as possible, just because you can!

At the end of the month, a winner will be chosen! Not only will said winner be featured on this blog, BUT they will also be awarded a P4P pattern of their choice!

How about that? Easy, fun, inspired and fun. (Did I say fun already?)

Patterns for Pirates and Girl Charlee

My love for drafting great modern pdf sewing patterns for women has found a great match…Girl Charlee Fabrics!

We’re both all about modern, trendy looks! And like Girl Charlee I mostly design for knit fabrics 🙂

This top is perfect for everyday wear with a great put together look! The loose flowy fit is so comfortable and flattering for women of all ages and shapes! I’m wearing Girl Charlee peach skin on the cover photo, this is a soft woven fabric with a lovely drape. It is one of the easiest drapey wovens I’ve ever worked with, because it’s not slippery! Plus! 🙂

Here I am in another Girl Charlee fabric- their chiffon.

Now SOME chiffons can be more difficult to work with, but this navy and white dot wasn’t! Although it is still chiffon, so it doesn’t like to hold a press well, it wasn’t super slippery while sewing. I LOVE this one! The super soft drape is a perfect match for this loose top!

This top can also be made is a knit fabric, which Girl Charlee is best known for! Here is my LOVELY sister in an all knit Everyday Elegance Top:

Isn’t she beautiful? Made in a soft knit, you can’t beat the comfort level of this shirt! And yet, you still look dressed nice, trendy, and even professional enough to go to work, church or out for some fun!

That’s right ladies, no tricky placket or buttons for you to get frustrated with! All the techniques on this top are easy and quick!

The sleeves have a small gather at the shoulder seam:

That means all your ease is in that gather–no tricky easing in the set in sleeves! YAY! Again, easy techniques!

The button tabs add such a cute and trendy look to the 3/4 sleeve, so you can wear this top year round!

And the longer tunic length with curved hem is perfect for pairing with leggings, skinny jeans or even your favorite work slacks! No more worrying about anything hanging out when you bend over 😉

And last the back yoke is perfect to play with fabric combos, and the back pleat gives it the extra flowy looseness you need in the back 😉
